The Slovenian Association for International Relations (SDMO – Slovensko društvo za mednarodne odnose) was founded in April 1991 to contribute to joint efforts for the prompt international recognition of the sovereign Republic of Slovenia. At the initiative of ambassador Rudi Čačinovič (1914 – 2008), the dean of Slovenian diplomacy, the association brought together experts in international relations, diplomats, foreign policy journalists, business people, university professor.

Mission

SDMO organizes lectures, discussions, and meetings with Slovenian and foreign experts on international affairs. Its aim is to convey knowledge and experience on events and processes that are important for understanding complexities of the increasingly interconnected world to policy makers and wider audiences. Thus, bring foreign affairs into wider public domain.

SDMO’s mission is also to promote Slovenia’s openness to the world. Its future goal is to become a full time think tank engaged in analysing foreign relations for possible use by policy makers.

Since July 2020, the seat of SDMO is at Linhartova 13, Ljubljana, Slovenia. SDMO is organising monthly panels followed by discussions on international affairs often complemented with presentations of new publications on international topics. Speakers are renowned diplomats, professors, politicians, experts on various aspects of international relations. Prominent figures from countries with which Slovenia has developed comprehensive cooperation have in the past appeared as guest speakers and panelists, including heads of states, parliamentarians, foreign ministers, ambassadors, and other distinguished personalities.

Talks and discussions normally take place in the Conference hall at the seat of SDMO. Members and other distinguished and interested guests are invited to participate in discussions. Attendance and participation of interested public is corresponding to the topicality of the discussed issues. Since 2019 majority of discussions and introductory contributions/remarks are accessible on the association’s website www.sdmo-drustvo.si. All presentations and debates from 2019 onwards can be listened on youtube, however predominantly in Slovenian language. For the time being some introductory notes are in English and a few written contributions are translated into English.

SDMO is an independent, non-profit, nonpartisan organization (NGO) and is financed by membership fees, the Foreign Ministry fund for NGO’s and contributions from individuals. At present SDMO has no permanent officers.

Ambassador Marjan Šetinc is the president of SDMO from 2019, ambassador dr. Jože Kunič is the Honorary President and ambassador Bojan Grobovšek the President Emeritus.
