The election timing coincides with Donald Trump\u2019s return to the U.S. presidency. Germany\u2019s crisis is deeply tied to the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and the cutoff of Russian gas due to sanctions\u2014partly exacerbated by Germany\u2019s abandonment of nuclear power.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Germany is the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>most significant political and economic player in the EU<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and a key global economy. Measured by nominal GDP and purchasing power per capita, Germany ranks as the world&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>fifth-largest economy<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2020<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, Germany\u2019s GDP accounted for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>25.60% of the EU&#8217;s total GDP<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2021<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, this share had dropped to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>25.11%<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2023<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, it fell below\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>25% (24.68%)<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and projections for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>2025<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0estimate it at just\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>24.60%<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2014a full percentage point lower than in 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Eurostat, Germany\u2019s projected nominal\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>GDP for 2025<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>$4.992 trillion USD<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, while the total\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>EU GDP<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0is estimated at\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>$20.290 trillion USD<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Germany comprises\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>8.43% of the EU\u2019s land area (357,022 km\u00b2) and 18.58% of its population<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. For comparison,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Slovenia<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0represents only\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>0.48% of the EU\u2019s land area, 0.47% of its population, and 0.36% of its GDP<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0($83.5 billion USD). Despite its small size, Slovenia once accounted for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>8% of Yugoslavia\u2019s population, 8% of its land area, and over 20% of its GDP<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Regardless,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Germany remains the \u201cpowerhouse of the EU\u201d<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. Its economic strength and stability are directly tied to the strength and stability of the European Union.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Political and Economic Shifts<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since the last elections\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>three and a half years ago<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, Germany\u2019s political and economic landscape has changed dramatically.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Trump administration (2017\u20132021)<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0imposed tariffs on German (and broader EU) exports, especially targeting\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>German cars<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and actively worked to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>block the Nord Stream gas pipeline<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>end of 2021<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, the West\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>rejected Russian proposals<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0for a strategic agreement with NATO and the U.S., worsening relations with Russia.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A series of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>global crises<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0followed:<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>COVID-19 pandemic<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0(August 2021), leading to the Taliban\u2019s return to power<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ongoing wars in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Syria, Ukraine, and Palestine<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Biden administration\u2019s continuation of Trump-era policies<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, including:<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maintaining additional tariffs<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recognizing Israeli sovereignty over\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Western sanctions against Russia<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and the shift from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>Russian gas to more expensive U.S. LNG<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Increasing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>migration pressures<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, adding to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>over one million refugees already accepted under Angela Merkel\u2019s government<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">All of these factors have contributed to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>political and economic turmoil under Chancellor Scholz\u2019s government<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. According to public opinion polls, this crisis has led to a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>surge in support for far-right political forces<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0in Germany.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>A Shift to the Right?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Germany appears to be under\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>dark clouds<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2014with a crisis-driven election that some see as coming at the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>wrong moment<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. However, perhaps it is happening at precisely the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>right time<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
